2012

Well it is finally here the year that has spawned many apocalyptical films and stories.  The doom mongers look to the Mayan calendar or lack of it to predict the end of the world.  The Mayans were known to be vastly knowledgeable about astronomy.  Their long count calendar suddenly finishes on December 21st 2012.  Speculation is rife about what this actually means; National Newspapers have run stories asking whether this means ‘the end of the world’ literally or just some kind of massive catastrophe that will effect a change in life as we know it today.

A high budget disaster movie called “2012” was released in 2009 which vividly portrays disaster scenes across the globe.  To put some ‘more meat on the bone’ there is apparently going to be a sign in the sky on the 21st December.  The Earth and the Sun are said to be aligning with the equator of the Milky Way thus briefly blocking the energy from the Galaxy to the Earth.  Add onto this the current economic woes of the world, erratic weather patterns, natural disasters and the Arab Spring etc. and it’s no wonder people are beginning to wonder if there is anything in this 2012 phenomenon.

Some New Age supporters believe a global catastrophe will usher in some sort of energy shift in awareness and consciousness amongst humanity.  Likewise Shi’ite Islamic’s believe that such conditions will herald the return of the Twelth Imman and a golden age of Islamic world control.  Iranian Shi’ite President Ahmadinejad believes the Twelth Imman’s return is imminent.

So, is there anything to worry about this year?  We may well see increasing disasters of all kinds throughout the year either man made, natural or both.  There have also been many predictions down the ages about the demise of mankind. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have predicted the end of world on numerous occasions 1914, 1918, 1925 and 1975 being amongst some of the dates.  They obviously failed in their predictions (false prophets?).  So called Christian preachers are not exempt from falsely prophesying the World’s end.  Harold Camping from America foretold that May 21st 2011 would herald the end.  When it didn’t happen he said that he’d made a mistake in his calculations and set a new date for the end on October 21st 2011.  It’s now 2012 so enough said!

As for the Christian Community we eagerly or should be looking forward to the return of Christ which will herald the end of the age.  He said in Matthew chapter 24 verses 3 to 8:-

Mat 24:3  And as He (Christ Jesus) sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the world?

Mat 24:4  And Jesus answered and said to them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Mat 24:5  For many will come in My name, saying, I am Christ, and will deceive many.

Mat 24:6  And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not troubled, for all these things must occur; but the end is not yet.

Mat 24:7  For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in different places.

Mat 24:8  All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Jesus Christ is going to return but even so many disasters will precede Him.  So, will that day be the 21st December 2012?  The answer is no He will not return on that day, why?  Again Jesus Christ Himself said:-

Mat 24:36  But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not the angels of Heaven, but only My Father.

Just as every other end date has proved to be wrong so will December 21st that doesn’t mean nothing out of the ordinary will happen on that date; just that the world will not come to a grinding halt on that day.  So, the warning to all Christians is not to believe the ‘false prophets’ and there are many about:  Harold Camping is a typical example.  People believed him and are probably feeling a bit sheepish now especially if that belief cost them physically, spiritually or financially.  If anyone claims to know the date when humanity perishes walk away from them; or better still put them right as the Apostle Paul said in 1 Thessalonians verses 5 and 6:-

1Th 5:1  But of the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that I write to you.

1Th 5:2  For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

For those of us who believe in Jesus Christ that day will be most welcome.  For those that don’t know Him at the time of writing there is still time to ask Jesus Christ into your lives.  Unfortunately countless millions of people will be caught out by the suddenness of His coming: please don’t be one of them look into His claims while you still can.
